www.theglobaldigital.com Tremendous Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe is the largest Alpine lake in
North America. It is the second deepest lake in
the United States at approximately 1600 feet.
Lake Tahoe experienced growth first in the Gold
Rush in the early 1800's. The Comstock Lode
nearby was discovered in 1858.
In the 1950's, and the 1960's, on the Nevada side
of the lake, Casino expansion took off.
Lake Tahoe from the onset drew the wealthy and
famous alike. George Whittell Jr. , perhaps, the most
famous resident of Lake Tahoe was a wealthy,
playboy, decorated soldier, and a philanthropist.
Originally from San Francisco, Geroge Whittell Jr.,
in the 1930's, purchased 40,000 acres on the Nevada
side of the lake and built Thunderbird Lodge. Thunderbird
Lodge originally included 27 miles of Lake Tahoe shoreline,
and currently offers guided tours.
Kokanee Salmon was accidentally introduced into
Lake Tahoe in 1944. Kokanee Salmon is a land-locked
variety of the Sockeye Salmon that turns red when it
spawns. There are many activities for every season
in Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe offers over 7 different world class
ski resorts and is considered one of the top ski destinations
in the U.S.
